The Waters of the Rio Doce Project started in October 2004, with the intention of motivating and informing the various sectors of society about the hydrographic basin of the Rio Doce, and the importance of water as a determining factor in development and the quality of life. It works towards the mobilization and articulation of individuals, groups and institutions and informing the public about successful projects and initiatives, both governmental and non-governmental, and private.
The Project seeks to encourage participation and cooperation, either spontaneous or induced, towards the successful implantation of policies for the management of water resources in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, within the area of the Rio Doce basin. One of its objectives is the strengthening of communities and other bodies within the system, such as federal, state and municipal committees and advisors in the two states, and in the country as a whole. The Waters of the Rio Doce Project is concerned not to take over the role of other institutions and not to impose actions, but to increase and amplify them. It undertakes activities such as information, education, training and capacity building, mobilization and marketing, as well as stimulating the development of research and academic work.
The priorities for its activities have seven themes:
Environmental Sanitation;
Science, Technology and Innovation;
Floods and high water levels;
Future Management;
Instruments for the management of water resources;
Water, Territory and Society;
Poultry Farming and Forestry.
Currently the Waters of the Rio Doce Project uses the following methods to communicate its activities:
